FROM A WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY RELEASE
MIDDLETOWN, CT - The Amherst College men's soccer team extended its win streak to four games with a 2-0 shutout victory at NESCAC and Little Three rival Wesleyan University on Saturday. With the victory, the Jeffs improved to 7-3-1 overall and 4-3 in conference play while the Cardinals dropped to 8-3 and 4-3.
Amherst pierced the scoring column 29:48 into the contest when junior forward Jeff Cantwell (Randolph, NJ) took a feed from senior quad-captain midfielder Carlo Valdesolo (Andover, MA) and netted his fifth goal of the season, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead at the break. The Jeffs withstood a fierce second half charge from the Cardinals and first-year phenom Joe Gannon (Hanson, MA) tacked on an insurance tally for his team-leading ninth goal of the year.
Amherst rookie goaltender Greg Lockwood (Vancouver, WA) was stellar in net finishing with six saves to earn his third shutout of the season. Wesleyan junior goalkeeper Brad Wasik (Dover, MA) and sophomore Dan Penrod (Piedmont, CA) combined to stop five Jeff shots.
Amherst returns to action Saturday at 11 a.m. against another NESCAC and Little Three opponent, Williams College.
