Jeffs Outlast Conn. College, 3-2

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College men's soccer team edged visiting NESCAC foe Connecticut College, 3-2, Thursday afternoon at Hitchcock Field. First-year forward Joe Gannon (Hanson, MA) paced the Jeffs with a pair of goals while classmate Ian Lovett (Newton, MA) also added a goal and an assist.

Amherst pierced the scoring column in the 29th minute of play when Lovett took a feed from junior forward Franklin Perry (Hartford, CT) and booted a rocket into the back of the net. The Jeffs tacked on another tally, shortly thereafter, when junior defender Michael York (Natick, MA) threw the ball into Lovett, who then chipped it over to Gannon for the tap-in goal. The Camels then retaliated with a pair of strikes. Senior back Joe Randall (Concord, MA) deflected a shot by junior back Nate Appel (New York, NY) into the top corner of the net with just 32 seconds remaining in the opening half. Junior midfielder Tim Walker (Storrs, CT) knocked a header past Jeff rookie goalkeeper Greg Lockwood (Vancouver, WA) less than a minute into the second stanza to even the score at 2-2.

Gannon notched the game-winner for Amherst in the 71st minute, taking a nifty feed from senior forward Dave Michener (Eden Prairie, MN) and blasting a shot into the back of the net. Lockwood recorded a pair of saves while Conn. College goalie Jon Knights (Nashua, NH) was stellar in net and finished with eight. With the victory, the Jeffs improved to 4-3-1 overall and 2-3 in conference play while the Camels remained winless and dropped to 0-8-1 and 0-5.

Amherst returns to action Saturday at 11 a.m. against visiting NESCAC rival Colby College.
