WILLIMANTIC, CT - The Amherst College women's soccer team scored twice in an 11-minute span early in the match and held on for its third straight win, a 4-2 decision at non-league foe Eastern Connecticut State University on Wednesday in a battle of regionally-ranked teams.
Amherst (3-0), ranked third in New England, scored twice to take a 2-0 lead into the 15th minute on goals by Cathy Poor and Lee Jay Henry and extended the lead to 3-0 with a goal by Sara Elkins in the 28th minute. With ECSU (5-1-1) threatening in the second half, Amherst first-year Tracy Montigny pounced on a loose ball in the ECSU zone, evaded a trio of defenders and unleashed a 25-yard blast that clipped the crossbar and found the net to cap the scoring.
Amherst returns to action this Saturday at 2 p.m. at NESCAC rival Connecticut College. The Jeffs are 2-0 in conference play after a pair of 2-0 wins over Colby and Bates Colleges.
