AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College women's soccer team couldn't overcome a two-goal deficit as the Jeffs lost to Middlebury College on Saturday, 2-1. Amherst's record falls to 5-3-1 (3-2-1 NESCAC), while Middlebury improves to 7-3 overall and 4-3 in NESCAC play.
After a back-and-forth first half, Middlebury took charge nine minutes into the second half. Middlebury junior Meg Bonney (Norwich, VT) blasted a shot into the lower left, giving the Panthers a 1-0 lead, but also giving Bonney her 30th career goal, a new Middlebury record.
Middlebury's Stacy Brendtro (Portland, OR) added to the lead 15 minutes later, blasting a shot past Amherst junior goalie Brooke Diamond (Longmeadow, MA) into the top right corner. Amherst rallied a mere three minutes later, as senior tri-captain Cathy Poor (Harwich Port, MA) scored on a free kick after Sara Elkins (Berkeley Hts., NJ) put the ball in play.
Diamond made eight saves in net for Amherst, while Middlebury's Ali Connolly (Marblehead, MA) made four saves.
Amherst returns to action Tuesday at 4 p.m. at NESCAC opponent Tufts.
