Men's Soccer Dominates Wesleyan, 3-0

AMHERST, MA - In front of a large homecoming crowd, Carlo Valdesolo (Andover, MA) fed Franklin Perry (Hartford, CT) on a goal, then scored himself three minutes later, as the Amherst College men's soccer team broke out with a 3-0 win over Little Three rival Wesleyan University on Saturday. Amherst improves to 6-4-2 overall and 4-2-2 in NESCAC play with one conference game remaining.

Amherst jumped out ahead of the Cardinals 11 minutes into the first half with some strong offensive pressure, culminating in Valdesolo making a feed to Perry on his left, who blasted a shot past Wesleyan first-year goalkeeper Dan Penrod (Piedmont, CA). Exactly three minutes later, Amherst sophomore Jeff Cantwell (Randolph, NJ) trapped a ball on the right corner of the 18-yard box, and Valdesolo blasted a left-footed shot which curled around Penrod's dive into the top right-hand corner of the goal.

Despite relatively even play the rest of the match, Wesleyan couldn't overcome the loss of momentum, including senior Casey Ryan's (Guilford, CT) chip over the goalkeeper six minutes into the second half which gave Amherst an insurmountable 3-0 lead.

Amherst senior Bill Orum (Greenwich, CT) made five saves in goal, before ceding his spot to fellow senior Anders Watson (Chicago, IL) who recorded one save. In addition, senior Michael Sproul (Coral Gables, FL) played well after getting the start in his last regular season home game. Wesleyan's Penrod made six saves in net, while the Cardinals fall to 7-4-1 overall and 3-4-1 in NESCAC play.

Amherst returns to action Tuesday at 4 p.m. at non-league foe Springfield College.
