WILLIAMSTOWN, MA - The Amherst College women's soccer team fell victim to 11th ranked Williams College on Saturday, 2-0, in Williamstown. Sophomore Claire Samuel scored two second half goals for the host Ephs as they improved to a sparkling 10-0 overall and 7-0 in NESCAC play, clinching the outright Little Three Championship for the first time since 1998.
The game was deadlocked 0-0 until the 47th minute, when Samuel found the back of the net with what proved to be the game-winner, unassisted. The score remained 1-0 until Samuel added an insurance tally with 16 seconds left in regulation, off a pair of assists from Marlene Bonasera and Stacey Starner.
Williams' goalkeepers Abi Jackson and Lindsay Starner each played 45 minutes and combined for the shutout with 15 saves. Amherst senior Brooke Diamond posted a season-high 12 saves in defeat, as the Jeffs fell to 6-4-1 overall and 4-3-1 in NESCAC play, leaving them in fifth place in the conference standings just ahead of Tufts University - who was in action today against visiting Trinity College.
Amherst returns to action Thursday at 4 p.m. at non-league foe Mt. Holyoke.
