No. 14 Jeffs Fall at Bates in OT

LEWISTON, ME - Bates College senior midfielder Bryan Stevens knocked home a penalty kick just over three minutes into overtime as 14th ranked Amherst College fell 2-1 to the host Bobcats in a NESCAC menÕs soccer showdown on Saturday. The Jeffs dropped to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play with the loss.

Stevens scored the game-winner when senior forward Chris Sporcic sent a cross through the box that deflected off an Amherst defender's hand.

Bates (2-0/1-0 NESCAC) drew first blood towards the end of the first period when sophomore forward Nick MacInnis fed classmate Brian Luoma along the endline for his first goal of the season.

Amherst answered in the 77th minute, when first-year forward Franklin Perry (Hartford, CT) took a loose ball inside the Bates box and slid it past Bobcat goalkeeper Dan Spector.

Spector made 12 saves in the winning effort, while Amherst keeper Bill Orum (Greenwich, CT) tallied three saves in defeat. The win was Bates' first over the Lord Jeffs since 1992.

Amherst returns to action this Wednesday at 2 p.m. at non-conference foe Babson.
