M-Soccer Falls in OT at Wesleyan

MIDDLETOWN, CT - In an afternoon that featured 2-1 overtime wins for the Amherst College women's soccer and field hockey teams, the Jeffs' men's soccer team played well but couldn't keep pace, dropping a 2-1 overtime thriller at NESCAC rival Wesleyan University on Saturday.

Wesleyan's Pad Hughes took a touch-pass from Nick Katzenbach and sent a right-footed blast just beyond Amherst goalie Bill Orum (Greenwich, CT) 20 minutes into the first overtime period to ice the victory for the homestanding Cardinals.

The Jeffs almost escaped with a 1-0 victory, as first-year midfielder Frank Perry (Hartford, CT) notched his team-leading seventh goal of the season in the 24th minute to give Amherst a 1-0 first half lead that stood until late in the second stanza.

Amherst, led by the excellent midfield play of newcomer Tim Canon (Easthampton, MA), senior Co-Captain Steve Squillario (Randolph, NJ) and sophomore Pat Garvey (Suffield, CT), held the Wesleyan attack scoreless until the 79th minute, when Emilio Parker connected from the top of the box to tie the game 1-1 and send it into overtime.

Hughes' overtime game-winner moved both teams' NESCAC record to 3-5. Wesleyan improved to 6-6 overall, while the Jeffs fell to 5-5-2 with the loss.

Amherst is still alive in the NESCAC post-season picture and can ensure a spot in the conference tournament with a home-win against Trinity College next Saturday. But first, the Jeffs will host non-league foe Springfield College on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at Hitchcock Field.
