Sophomore Mekhala Costello earned medalist honors and helped the Mammoths win the NESCAC Championship in May, earning a trip to the NCAA Championships.
With her final shot of the 54-hole tournament, Costello sank a two-foot birdie putt that earned the Mammoths the championship by one stroke and individual medalist honors for herself by one stroke as well, finishing the weekend with a 6-over-par 219, highlighted by carding a 3-under-par 68 in the second round.
At the NCAA Championships, Costello shot 6 over par through four rounds, finishing tied for 19th in the tournament, and helping Amherst tie for seventh place at the national championship, the team’s best finish since 2002. It was the second top-20 finish in two years for Costello, who tied for 14th place at last year’s NCAA Championships.
Costello was awarded First Team All-NESCAC honors as well as All-Region honors from the Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA). A political science major from Canton, Costello also earned a spot on the NESCAC All-Academic Team. Her success and accolades on the course come despite only playing half the year with the women’s golf team as Costello is a defender on the women’s soccer team, where she has also won a NESCAC Championship and earned CSC Academic All-District honors.
