AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College women's volleyball team used 12 kills from Nicole Gould '17 and 11 kills from Marialexa Natsis '18 to help lift the Purple & White to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-14) victory over Bridgewater State University in day one action of the 25th annual Hall of Fame Invitational Friday evening at LeFrak Gymnasium.
With the win, Amherst improves to 13-6 on the season, and will square off against SUNY Canton at 10 a.m. before taking on UMass-Boston at 1 p.m. in day two action Saturday.
Amherst raced out to a 7-0 lead in the opening stanza backed by kills from Annika Reczek '18, Natsis, Maggie Danner '17 and two from Lauren Reppert '19. The Purple & White extended its lead to 23-13 on a kill by Gould before Bridgewater State began to claw back. Clara Goncalves floored a kill, and following a pair of errors by Amherst, Hannah Maymon notched a kill to pull the Bears to within six at 23-17. An assisted block by Reczek and Gould made it 24-17, before Maymon added another kill to keep the deficit at six (24-18). From there, Gould registered another strike to give the Purple & White a 25-18 win in the first set.
Despite trailing early in the second frame, Amherst responded with a 5-0 run in the middle of the set to post an 18-12 advantage that was highlighted by an assisted block from Danner and Natsis and a kill by Danner. The Bears again answered and closed to within three (19-16) following a kill by Colleen Longley, but the hosts were able to stave off the rally with a 6-2 run to seal a second 25-18 win, and take a 2-0 lead in the contest.
In the third set, Amherst against mounted a large lead as Claire Dennis '20 smashed a kill that gave the Purple & White a commanding 21-12 cushion. Longley and Alyssa Kelley each tabbed kills to help pull Bridgewater State to within six (22-14), but a pair of Bears' errors and a kill by Danner completed the sweep for Amherst.
- Amherst hit .264 for the match as Kate Bres '17 and Charlotte Duran '20 dished out 19 and 17 assists respectively to lead the Purple & White's balanced attack. Danner finished with seven kills and a pair of assisted blocks, while Gould and Natsis logged five and three digs respectively.
- Leading the defensive efforts were Duran and Asha Walker '18 who logged a team-best eight digs each. Kelci Keeno '17 follwoed with seven, while Hayes Honea '19 added six.
- Erin Clifford led the Bridgewater State offense with seven kills, while Goncalves added six kills. Charleyne Panner posted 19 assists and 12 digs, while Cassidy Tyros led all players with 14 digs.
