AMHERST, Mass. – Amherst College used a match-high 12 kills from Maggie Danner '17, a match-best 14 assists from Kate Bres '17, and a match-best 18 digs from Hayes Honea '19 to help the Purple & White power to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-5) sweep of Colby College in Friday evening's NESCAC contest at LeFrak Gymnasium.
With the win, Amherst improves to 8-3 on the season, 3-1 in NESCAC play, while Colby moves to 2-10 overall, 0-3 in league action. The Purple & White return to the court Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. when they host league foe Bates College at LeFrak Gymnasium.
The opening set saw Amherst jump out to an early, 7-1 lead that it quickly extended into a commanding, 20-4 advantage following 6-0 run that was capped by a Colby attacking error. A kill by the Mules' Alexa Busser halted the Purple & White's momentum, and Colby scored nine of the next 12 points to pull to within nine at 23-14. A kill by Annika Reczek '18 gave the hosts set point, but a pair of Paige Hanssen kills, one from Elizabeth Noyes, and a service ace by Karolina Serhan pulled the Mules even closer as the visitors crept to within six points at 24-18. However, an attacking error on the ensuing point allowed Amherst to clinch a 1-0 lead in the contest.
A strong second stanza saw the Purple & White post a 7-1 lead early in the frame. Colby pulled to within four at 11-7 on the strength of a Serhan termination, but a 10-2 run that featured a pair of kills from Nicole Gould '17, one from Emily Kolsky '20, an assisted block from Gould and Reczek, and a service ace from Bres allowed Amherst to push its lead to 21-9 and eventually pull away to a 25-13 win in the second set.
Once again, Amherst got off to a quick start in the third session, powering to a 6-1 lead before Colby rallied to within four at 9-5 following a Purple & White miscue. From there, the hosts scored 16 straight points to close out the set and preserve the sweep. Amherst used five kills by Kolsky, two service aces from Kate Antion '19, a kill each from Marialexa Natsis '18 and Claire Dennis '20, and an assisted block from Natsis and Dennis to keynote the impressive stretch.
- Bres directed the Amherst charge with 14 assists, while Charlotte Duran '20 dished out nine helpers. Honea and Adelaide Shunk '20 chipped in four assists each in the winning effort.
- Danner led all hitters with 12 kills and a .370 hitting percentage, while Kolsky delivered seven kills. Natsis and Gould finished with five kills each.
- Honea and Kelci Keeno '17 were terrific in defense notching 18 and 12 digs respectively, while Natsis added three assisted blocks.
- Colby was led by Hanssen's six-kill effort, while Serhan followed with four. Molly Manuel led the Mules with eight assists and 13 digs, while Hanssen contributed eight digs. Erin Maidman cashed in with seven digs in the losing effort in addition to handing out four helpers.
