BRUNSWICK, Maine – Combining for 55 kills in four sets, the Amherst College volleyball team opened NESCAC play with a 3-1 win (25-16, 23-25, 25-18, 25-19) over Bowdoin College Friday evening at Morrell Gymnasium.
With the victory, Amherst improves to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in league action, while Bowdoin falls to 4-2 (0-1 NESCAC). The Purple & White return to the court on Saturday, Sept. 17 when they travel to Tufts University for a 2 p.m. tilt.
Amherst opened the match strong, earning seven of the first eight points to jump out to a 7-1 lead in the first set. With the Purple & White holding an 10-4 edge, Bowdoin would go on a run of their own, scoring five unanswered points to make the score 10-9 before Nicole Gould '17 closed out 25-16 set win with three kills to give Amherst a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Polar Bears rebounded in the second set. After exchanging four lead changes, Bowdoin would string together six unanswered points to take a 13-16 lead. Battling back, Charlotte Duran '20 would hold serve as the Purple & White notched five points on two attack errors and three kills to take a 21-19 edge. Bowdoin was able to pull away however, with Sydney Salle notching two kills and Michelle Albright adding another as the Polar Bears claimed a 23-25 set win.
The third set once again featured by back-and-forth runs by both squads, with Amherst earning an early 6-2 edge before Bowdoin rallied back to tie the score at 8-8. Amherst would regain the momentum following two kills by Emily Kolsky '20 and an Hayes Honea '20 service ace, as they used seven kills, two attack errors and a bad set to secure the 25-18 win and a 2-1 match lead.
After falling behind 0-2, Maggie Danner '17 tallied three kills to help Amherst take a 4-3 edge. The Polar Bears and Amherst would trade points until back-to-back kills by Marialexa Natsis '18 and three Bowdoin attack errors made it a 16-10 contest in favor of the Purple & White. Amherst would close out the 25-19 set victory with kills by Natsis and Danner to earn the 4-1 match win.
- Kolsky finished with 12 kills for Amherst, while Danner and Lauren Reppert '19 each totaled 10 kills apiece.
- Honea led the Purple & White with 29 digs, followed by Kate Bres '17 with 11 and Danner and Duran with 10 each.
- Duran recorded 20 assists to lead the way for Amherst, while Bres registered 18 assists for the Purple & White.
- Caroline Flaharty led the Polar Bears with 16 kills, while Quincy Leech led all players on the court with 42 assists in the match.
