Volleyball Sweeps Bridgewater State, Gordon

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Amherst College women's volleyball team posted a 3-0 (25-6, 25-13, 25-16) sweep of Bridgewater State University, and a 3-0 (25-12, 25-23, 25-20) sweep of Gordon College during Wildcat Invitational action hosted by Johnson & Wales University Saturday afternoon in Providence, R.I.

With the two victories, Amherst improves to 2-1 on the season, and returns to action Wednesday, Sept. 14 when it hosts Western New England University at 7 p.m. at LeFrak Gymnasium in its 2016 home opener.

Amherst 3, Bridgewater State 0

Against Bridgewater State, Amherst was led offensively by Marialexa Natsis '18 and Maggie Danner '17 who floored nine and seven kills respectively. Emily Kolsky '20 added six kills, while Nicole Gould '17 followed with four kills in the winning effort.

Defensively, the Purple & White used 10 digs from Hayes Honea '19 and eight each from Asha Walker '18 and Charlotte Duran '20, while Walker and Natsis served up two aces each.

Duran led the squad with 14 assists, while Kate Bres '17 dished out seven. Natsis and Danner combined for seven assisted blocks to help seal the win.

Clara Goncalves led Bridgewater State with seven kills, while Cassidy Tyros led all players with 16 digs. Charleyne Panner added a match-high 17 assists in the losing effort for the Bears.

Amherst 3, Gordon 0

Against Gordon, Gould smashed seven kills, Danner floored six kills, and Kolsky and Natsis chipped in five kills each to help Amherst stake its second win of the season.

Bres and Duran paced the attack with 12 assists each, while Honea, who dug a team-high 17 balls, joined Kelci Keeno '17 in recording two service aces. Bres added eight digs, while Walker contributed seven in the winning effort.

At the net, Danner posted two solo blocks, while Claire Dennis '20 and Lauren Reppert '19 accounted for four kills apiece.

Gordon was led by Carleigh Petersen and Mackenzie Hinds who smashed 12 and 10 kills respectively.

Renee Cooprider dished out 32 helpers, while Maggie Risma led the team with 17 digs and three service aces. Petersen added 11 digs, Cooprider chipped in eight digs, and Hinds finished with three service aces to help pace the Fighting Scots in defeat.
