LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Amherst College women's volleyball team is one of a record 764 teams to receive the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the 2015-16 season as recently announced by the organization.
The award, which was initiated during the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
Amherst is one of 140 NCAA Division III institutions to receive the award, and one of six NESCAC schools joining Bowdoin College, Colby College, Hamilton College, Middlebury College, and Williams College as the league's recipients of the prestigious honor.
In 2015, the Purple & White posted an overall record of 23-5, 8-2 in NESCAC action, and advanced to their 17th consecutive conference tournament, and a third straight semifinal. Amherst also made its seventh NCAA postseason appearance since 1998, and first since 2010, advancing to the second round of the tournament.
The Purple & White begin the 2016 campaign at the two-day Johnson & Wales University Invitational beginning Friday, September 9 in Providence, R.I.
