PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Amherst College women's volleyball team posted a pair of victories over Bridgewater State University and Roger Williams University on Friday evening in day one action at the Wildcat Invitational hosted by Johnson & Wales University in Providence, R.I.
With the wins, Amherst begins its 2015 campaign 2-0 overall, and returns to Wildcat Invitational action Saturday, September 12 at 10 a.m. against Salve Regina University, and Johnson & Wales at 12 p.m.
Amherst 3, Bridgewater State 0
In Amherst's season opener against Bridgewater State, the Jeffs earned a 3-0 sweep by posting scores of 25-7, 25-15, 25-18.
Lizzie Ahern '16 led Amherst with nine kills, followed by eight from Marialexa Natsis '18, and seven each from Maggie Danner '17 and Nicole Gould '17. Katie Warshaw '16 added 15 digs to lead the Jeffs in the winning effort.
Amherst 3, Roger Williams 1
Amherst swept its second match of the evening, 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 22-25, 25-12) against Roger Williams. Carter led the Jeffs' offensive efforts with 41 assists, while Danner, Ahern and Gould notched 14, 14 and 11 kills respectively.
Carter also led the squad with 16 digs, Warshaw added 13 digs, and Asha Walker '17 contributed 10 digs in the winning effort. First-year Hayes Honea chipped in nine digs, while Danner and Samantha Newby '16 combined for six total blocks.
The Purple & White returns to Wildcat Invitational action on Saturday when it takes on Salve Regina University at 10 a.m. and host Johnson & Wales at 2 p.m.
