Jeffs Upend Bridgewater State, 3-1, Fall to Colby, 3-2

NORTHAMPTON, MA - The Amherst College volleyball team downed Bridgewater State College, 3-1, on Saturday morning, before suffering a narrow 3-2 loss to Colby College in championship-bracket play at the Hall of Fame Volleyball Classic, hosted by Smith College. Sophomore Whitney Kouvaris (Jacksonville, FL) and rookie Sara Heller (La Canada, CA) earned All-Tournament Team honors. 

Amherst topped Bridgewater St., 30-27, 29-31, 30-21, 30-27. Sophomore Jaclyn DeMais (Hillsdale, NJ) paced the Jeffs, tallying 15 kills, 19 digs, four aces and four blocks, while junior Kristin Quinn (Pacific Palisades, CA) notched 14 kills, two blocks and two aces. Heller (La Canada, CA) dished out 36 assists and posted 10 blocks, nine digs and an ace, while classmate Hannah Wirth (Pacific Palisades, CA) added 10 kills and three blocks, and junior Laura Golden (Boca Raton, FL) contributed 10 digs and an ace. 

The Jeffs then dropped a five-game marathon to Colby in afternoon action, 19-30, 30-17, 25-30, 30-23, 15-12, as they fell to 15-9 on the season. DeMais again led the way for the Jeffs, notching 20 kills, 15 digs and six blocks, while Quinn added 16 kills. Kouvaris posted 13 kills, Heller contributed 48 assists, 13 digs and two blocks, and Golden tallied 13 digs and an ace. 

Amherst returns to action Tuesday at 7 p.m. at NESCAC rival Trinity College
