First Season

  • Following a successful season as the head coach of the men's track & field program, it was announced that Rubin would be taking over as the head coach of the women's track & field program in June 2018

  • Coached Two USTFCCCA All-Americans, Seven All-Region Selections, Five Individual All-NESCAC Nods and One Relay Team All-NESCAC Selection

  • Guided Competitors to Seven Top-10 Finishes at the NCAA Indoor & Outdoor Championships


Entering his second season at Amherst and first season as head coach of the women's track & field teams, Stephen Rubin brings 25 years of collegiate coaching experience to the Pioneer Valley, including NCAA national championships at both the Division III and Division I levels.

In his first season at the helm of the Mammoths, Rubin brought Amherst back into the national conversation, mentoring 13 NCAA Championship qualifiers and guiding them to seven top-10 finishes at the national meets. Under his leadership, Amherst racked up four USTFCCCA All-American selections, seven All-Region nods and eight All-NESCAC selections while winnning two NESCAC individual titles (4x800 relay, 800m).

Amherst College Announces Promotion for Track & Field Head Coach Stephen Rubin

Before joining the Amherst community, Rubin served as an assistant track & field coach at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 2012-2017 where he coached 14 first-team All-America selections, 12 ACC Championship individual title winners and four school record breakers while guiding four student-athletes to the 2016 Olympic Trials. 

From 2007 until 2012, Rubin was the head track & field coach at Case Western Reserve and was also the Director of Strength and Conditioning. Rubin also completed stints as the head track & field coach at Florida International University (2003-2007) and Washington University – St. Louis (2001-2003). He was also an assistant track & field coach at the University of Miami from 1992-2001 where he specialized in jumps, throws and multi-events.

In addition to his abundance of coaching experience, Rubin has gained an array of experience working with USA Track and Field in various capacities including: USA Junior Elite Camp (United States Olympic Training Center Director – 1998, 1999, 2004); associate coordinator – women's elite jumps (1995-2000); combined events coaches summit (2010), and has served as a Level I School director and instructor, and a Level II instructor (1998-2004).

A 1991 graduate of Emory University, Rubin holds several certifications including Level I and Level II USA Track and Field Coaches Education certificates; is a certified strength and conditioning specialist; and is certified in First Aid and CPR.
