ANAHEIM, CA - The second-ranked Amherst College women's tennis team started its 2008 spring season this afternoon in Anaheim, CA against the Lions of The College of New Jersey. The Lord Jeffs ran away with a 9-0 win to set the bar high for the season.
After taking their season all the way to the National Championship match last season, the Lord Jeffs have come out firing this spring. The Lord Jeffs took all three doubles match-ups to set the tone, as the top-ranked doubles team of senior Alicia Menezes (Staten Island, NY) and sophomore Brittany Berckes (Secaucus, NJ) won 9-8. The pairing picked up the tiebreaker win 11-9.
The number two and three doubles pairings completed the discipline sweep with 8-5 and 8-1 wins. Senior captain Laura Stein (Rockport, ME) paired with classmate Jen Murphy (Simsbury, CT) to defeated the tandem of Hear/Kutner in lopsided scores.
In singles play, senior Monica Snyder (Newton, MA) took the court alonsige Berckes, Menezes and first-years Natasha Brown (Woodland Hills, CA) and Carlissa and Laken King (Laurelton, NY). Brown and the twin King sisters both impressed onlookers with straight set wins in their first collegiate seasons.
Snyder, Menezes and standout Berckes each won this afternoon as well to help complete the shutout of TCNJ. Berckes played in the top slot, and won 6-4, 6-0 in a complete match.
Amherst has very little time to relax before facing Pomona tomorrow morning at 11 a.m.
