AMHERST, Mass. – In their opening day of the Pioneer Valley Invitational, No. 16 Amherst women's squash went 2-0 after taking down William Smith 8-1 before blanking Hamilton, 9-0, at the Davenport Squash Courts on Saturday.
The Mammoths pick up two important wins, jumping to 6-3 and will battle Haverford tomorrow in the final day of the Pioneer Valley at 10:00 a.m.
In their duel with William Smith, Amherst won in straight sets in eight of the nine matches.
At #4, Caroline Conway '20 held Natalia Welker from scoring in the first set (11-0), before winning 11-3 in the second and third. Pierson Klein '20 followed up Conway with another win at #5 (11-3, 11-6, 11-3), while Riddhi Sampat '21 routed Djeneba Ballo, 3-0, at #6 (11-3, 11-7, 11-6).
Following wins from Keeley Osborn '22 and Katy Sabina Correia '20 at #7 and #8, Jenna Finkelstein '20 held Karina Lazaro to one point in the opening two sets of their match at #9, before completing the sweep with a 11-3 mark in the third (11-1, 11-1, 11-3).
The only win for William Smith came at the top of the ladder as Marcela Marquez seized #1 with a 12-10, 11-7, 6-11, 11-6 win.
Amherst swiftly moved past Hamilton in their second match of the day, winning every competition in straight sets. At the top spot, Daksha Pathak '23 won 11-4 in the first set before Hope Worcester answered with eight points in the second. However, Pathak held strong and took home the 11-4, 11-8, 11-2 victory.
After a default by the Continentals from the #2 spot, Soroko won 11-5, 11-1, 11-5 against Natalie Harrity, before Conway stifled Sydney Soloway 11-4, 11-2, 11-6 at #4.
Holding Madison Sakheim to fewer than four points in each set, Klein maintained the clean sweep after winning 11-3, 11-4, 11-2 at #5.
Sampat followed up Klein with another straight-set win of 11-4, 11-3, 11-5 before Correia posted a demanding 11-1, 11-4, 11-1 triumph over Eleanor Struthers.
Finkelstein made short work of her opponent Daisy Sulavik (11-2, 11-3, 11-2), while Emma Spencer '22 capped off the day besting Eleanor Arnold an 11-4, 11-2, 11-9.
