No. 16 Amherst Women's Squash Downed by No. 12 Brown, 9-0

AMHERST, Mass. – After consecutive wins in their last outings, No. 16 Amherst women's squash dropped their third loss on the season following a 9-0 decision against Ivy League foe Brown University on Tuesday afternoon.

With the setback, the Mammoths move to 4-3 on the season while the Bears get back in the win column with their third win on the season, improving to 3-4.

The Bears won in straight sets in all but two of the matches as Daksha Pathak '23 lost the opening sets of her match against Alexa Jacobs at number one (11-7, 11-9), before stealing the third set 11-4 to bring the match to 2-1. With Pathak only tallying five points, Jacobs was able to hold out for the 3-1 win in the fourth to take the top spot.

Lauren Weil '23 faced off against Abigail Dichter at number two, losing in straight sets (11-4, 11-8, 11-2) before Lilly Soroko '22 fell in her opening set against Hannah Seckendorf (11-2) but answered in the second. Hoever, in a match that ended in extra points, Soroko could not maintain the edge and eventually fell 16-14 before an 11-3 mark by Seckendorf in the third set downed the Philadelphia, Pa. native. 

Caroline Conway '20 (3-11, 4-11, 5-11) and Pierson Klein '20 (3-11, 5-11, 3-11) were held to five points or fewer in each set against opponents Danielle Benstock and Isabel Young, while Riddhi Sampat '23 fell in the opening sets against Isabella Kearns before notching seven in the final set, but was held off for another Bears win (11-3, 11-6, 10-7).

At number seven, Margaret Werner '23 couldn't top Scarlett Bergam as the Mammoth lost 11-2, 11-3, 11-4, before Keeley Osborn '22 came close in her second set against Catherin Kimmel. With the score set at 11-10 in favor of the Bears, Kimmel scored the next point to clinch a 12-10 triumph before solidifying the win with a 11-6 mark in the final stanza.

At number nine, Katy Sabina Correia '20 wouldn't go down without a fight, stealing the second set of her match against Katherine Dowling, 11-7, to tie it up at 1-1. Dowling answered with an 11-5 score line in the third before capping off the day with an 11-6 third set win.  

The Mammoths will return to their home courts this weekend, hosting the annual Pioneer Valley Invitational. In their opening day (Saturday, Jan. 25) Amherst will take on William Smith at 11:00 a.m. before following that up with a 1:00 PM bout against Hamilton. Brown hits the road for a 1:30 p.m. faceoff against Mount Holyoke College.
