HARTFORD, Conn. – Lilly Soroko '22 and Margaret Werner '21 secured wins at number three and eight, respectively, as the Amherst women's squash team drop to Dartmouth College 7-2 in the opening day of the CSA Team Championships at the Kellner Squash Center on the campus of Trinity College.
Soroko tallied her ninth win on the season when she took on Brynn Bank at the third spot. Soroko dropped the first set 11-8 before posting 11-5, 11-7 finishes in the second and third sets. Down one, Bank battled to bring things back even but Soroko proved to be too much as she claimed the fourth set 12-10 for the Mammoths first win on the day.
Werner went the full length against her opponent Julia Potter when the foes met at number eight. After going up early by winning the first two sets 12-10 and 11-7, Werner found herself in trouble when Potter thwarted her in the third set by an 11-1 margin and claimed the fourth by a score of 11-8. With both sides even, the fifth set was solved in extra points with Werner coming out on top with a 14-12 triumph to secure the Mammoths final victory on the day.
Dartmouth went on to sweep six of their seven wins with Anne Blasberg (11-1, 11-5, 11-7) and Emma Mactaggart (11-7, 11-5, 11-8) claiming the top of the ladder when they swept Mammoths Caroline Conway '20 and Rachael Ang '19 in the top two spots. Riddhi Sampat '21 and Keeley Osborn '22 fell to Ellie Gozigian and Sandra Reiss at the fourth and fifth spots in the first three sets. Gozigian was able to defeat Sampat 11-5, 11-3, 11-2 before Osborn dropped 11-1, 11-7, 11-5 to Reiss.
Priya Sinha '19 lost her opening two sets to Junnat Anwar at numer six but came back to steal the third set 11-7. However, Anwar didn't let up in the fourth and limited Sinha to four points, marking the Dartmouth victory. Katy Sabina Correia '20 pressed the issue in her opening set against Emma Roberts, forcing her into extra points. However, the Dartmouth student-athlete prevailed with a 14-12 win before securing the next two sets 11-7 and 11-9 to notch the sweep.
Pierson Klein '20 rounds out the Mammoths appearance in the quarterfinals of the CSA Team Championships as she faced off against Darden Gildea at the seven spot. After dropping 11-6 in the first set, Klein posted eight points in the second but ultimately fell 11-8. Gildea went on to secure Dartmouth's final win on the day when she limited Klein to less than three points in the third set (11-6, 11-8, 11-3).
The Mammoths fall to 8-9 overall and will compete in the consolation bracket over the weekend before solidifying their collective efforts this season. The CSA Individual Nationals is the final mark on their calendars which takes place next weekend on March 1st. Dartmouth advances to the semifinals and will play Brown University, who blanked Williams College 9-0 in their quarterfinal match.
