HADLEY, Mass. – Still flying high from their New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) championship victory on Sunday, Amherst College defender Bella Palma '20 and forward Sarah Sullivan '23 have been named NESCAC Co-Players of the Week, announced on Monday afternoon by the conference office.
The pair were key parts of an Amherst team that swept through the conference tournament with three consecutive shutouts, culminating in a 1-0 win over Middlebury yesterday to secure the program's fifth conference championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Sullivan scored the championship-winning goal for Amherst as the Mammoths defeated Middlebury 1-0 in the 2019 NESCAC title game. In the 53rd minute of a scoreless game, Sullivan laced a shot off of the Panther's goalkeeper's fingertips and into the back of the net for her second career collegiate goal.
At center back, Palma was the leader of a stout Amherst defensive line that recorded a pair of shutouts in the 2019 NESCAC Women's Soccer championship weekend. She helped the Mammoths keep top-seeded Tufts University to just four shots on goal in the 3-0 semifinals win, and then held Middlebury to just three attempts, and only one on target as Amherst kept their 14th clean sheet of the season.
Amherst earned regional host duties for the 2019 NCAA Divsion III Women's Soccer Tournament and will face off against Maine Maritime in the first round on Saturday, November 16th on Hitchcock Field.
