HADLEY, Mass. – After a three-game week without giving up a single goal through 253 minutes played, senior goalkeeper Erica Sanders '20 was selected as the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Player of the Week, as announced by the league office Monday afternoon.
Sanders Player of the Week selection serves as her first conference accolade as well as Amherst women's soccer's first on the season.
Sanders, who hasn't let in a goal on the 2019 tab, secured two shutouts on the 3-0 week and played a pivotal role in the Mammoths 2-0 win over top-ranked Middlebury who averages 2.38 goals a game.
With three saves on the day, the Chevy Chase, Maryland native came up big for the Mammoths starting in the first half when a set-piece allowed a Panther striker to send in a curling shot destined for the top right corner of the net. A leaping, one-handed punch from Sanders was enough to knock the ball up and over the crossbar to maintain the stalemate early on.
In the second half, a ball was played over the defensive line and into the penalty area where Middlebury's attacker fired a low driven shot aimed for the left side of goal. Sanders, who was tracking back to her left, was able to dive to her right and snag the ball in a highlight-reel save, keeping the Mammoths in front by a 1-0 edge.
In Amherst's non-conference test against Springfield, Sanders was needed twice through her 90 minutes before a 4-0 decision against Colby maintained her perfect 1.00 save percentage on the season.
Sanders and the Mammoths conclude their regular season with two final NESCAC games, first against Bates on October 26th before traveling to Trinity (Conn.) for a 7:00 PM bout on Tuesday, October 29th.
