AMHERST, MA - After edging Williams College in overtime on Saturday, the third-ranked and second-seeded Amherst College women's lacrosse team rallied to down visiting seventh-seed Wesleyan University, 15-9, in the quarterfinals of the NESCAC Postseason Tournament on Sunday at Hitchcock Field. Junior midfielder Liz Martin (Baltimore, MD) paced the Jeffs with five goals, while senior attacker Abby Ouimet (Hatfield, MA) tallied a pair and dished out four assists.
Things looked bleak for the Jeffs early on. The Cardinals erupted with the game's first five goals in the opening minutes. Amherst stormed back to even the score at 6-6 with 7:45 remaining in the opening half. Junior midfielder Allison Aldrich (Cornwall, VT) - who finished with four goals - notched the equalizer when she fired a low shot into the back of the net. Shortly thereafter, the Jeffs took a 7-6 lead when Martin sprinted downfield and tallied her team-leading 45th goal of the season. The hosts tacked on three more strikes to take a 10-6 advantage at the break.
The onslaught continued in the second half as Amherst racked up five more goals on their way to the win. Senior netminder Brooke Diamond (Longmeadow, MA) finished with eight saves for the Jeffs, while junior Meriel Darzen (Concord, MA) turned aside 23 for the Cardinals. With the victory, Amherst improves to 13-1 overall while Wesleyan's season comes to an end at 6-8.
The Jeffs return to action Saturday at 2:30 p.m. for the NESCAC Tournament semifinals at Middlebury College where they will face Colby College, Trinity College or Williams College contingent on today's results.
