AMHERST, MA - The third-ranked Amherst College women's lacrosse team improved to 6-1 overall with a non-league victory over visiting Wellesley College (4-7) Thursday afternoon at Hitchcock Field. Junior midfielder Liz Martin (Baltimore, MD) led the Jeffs with six goals and an assist, while senior middie Mary Kate Allen (Springfield, MA) chipped in with a pair of goals and three assists.
The Blue drew first blood less than a minute into the contest when senior attacker Lisa Andruszkiewicz (Beverly, MA) tallied the first of her three strikes on the day. Amherst retaliated with nine consecutive goals. Martin ignited the barrage when she hit the top corner of the net off a free position shot. She rounded out the nine-goal spurt with her fifth goal of the game. Wellesley cut the deficit to 11-6 when senior midfielder Grace Tsan (Alexandria, VA) notched the first of her three goals.
The second half saw much of the same as the Jeffs extended the advantage to 19-7 when senior attacker Laura Schifter (Washington, DC) netted her second goal of the game, assisted by first-year attacker Scotty Hanley (Sparks, MD). Amherst senior attackers Erin Beaumont (Summit, NJ) and Abby Ouimet (Hatfield, MA) each added four points, while Wellesley junior midfielder Dawn Kim (Greenwich, CT) tallied a pair of goals in the losing effort.
Senior Brooke Diamond (Longmeadow, MA) and sophomore Olivia D'Ambrosio (Farmington, CT) combined to finish with four saves for the Jeffs, while rookie Kim Della Buono (Springfield, PA) and junior Alissa Gordon (Sudbury, MA) combined to turn aside 11 shots for the Blue.
Amherst returns to action Saturday at Noon against visiting NESCAC and Little Three rival Wesleyan University.
