April 2, 2003

AMHERST, MA - Senior attacker Abby Ouimet (Hatfield, MA) notched three goals and three assists to lead the second-ranked Amherst College women's lacrosse team to an 11-6 victory over 13th-ranked Trinity College in a NESCAC matchup Wednesday afternoon at Hitchcock Field. Jeff junior midfielders Liz Martin (Baltimore, MD) and Jackie Sargent (Concord, MA) each added a trio of goals.

The Bantams jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by senior midfielder Elizabeth Miller (Weston, MA) and sophomore attacker Beatrice Gratry (Hunting Valley, OH). The Jeffs countered with strikes from Ouimet and Sargent, knotting the score at 2-2. With Trinity ahead 3-2, Amherst netted three goals to take a 5-3 advantage at the break.

The Jeffs extended the lead to 8-3 when Ouimet gathered her own rebound and fired a shot through Bantam junior netminder Alexandra Benjamin's (Weston, MA) legs. Gratry tallied her team-leading 45th goal of the season before Sargent tickled the twine to round the scoring out at 11-6.

Senior goalie Brooke Diamond (Longmeadow, MA) was stellar and finished with 12 saves for Amherst, while Benjamin turned aside 10 shots. With the victory, the Jeffs improve to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in league play, while the Bantams suffer their first loss of the year and drop to 7-1 and 2-1.

Amherst returns to action Saturday at 1 p.m. at NESCAC foe Middlebury College.
