Mammoths Drop Conference Clash with Colby, 1-0

AMHERST, Mass. – A Mules' score just before the second intermission stood as the difference maker as the Amherst College women's ice hockey team was dealt a 1-0 loss by Colby College Friday evening at Orr Rink.

With the setback, Amherst falls to 14-5-4 on the season and to 8-4-3 in league play, while Colby climbs to 14-5-4 overall (9-3-3 NESCAC).

Neither side was able to get on the board in a scoreless first period, with the Mammoths owning a 14-8 edge in shots on frame in the stanza.

Threatening at the 16:07 mark, junior Rose Mroczka had once of Amherst's best chances of the opening 20 minutes after a turnover at mid-ice and dish from Kate Pohl '23 gave the forward a 1-v-0. Deking to her forehand, Mroczka was unable to sneak one past the Mules' keeper as Nina Prünster read the play perfectly to make the diving stop.

Colby's best chance of the first came at the 7:26 mark and sparked a momentum swing to the visitors, but Caitlin Walker '21 continued her sensational play on the goal line as of late and  got her pad on Colleen Donoghue's redirect on a shot from Tess Dupre aimed for the far left post.

Breaking the deadlock with 56.9 seconds remaining in the second period, Lauren Klein notched her seventh goal of the winter with assists from Moira Mullaney and Bri Michaud-Nolan to give the Mules a 1-0 lead. Working the puck out of the right corner, a deflection landed at the stick of Mullaney in front who left a drop pass for Klein alone at the top of the crease. Capitalizing on the opportunity, Mullaney slid a shot inside the right post for the score.

The Mammoths looked to net the equalizer with 12:18 remaining in regulation behind a breakaway chance from Carley Daly '23, however the first-year was unable to best the netminder with a deke as Prünster came up with her second breakaway stop of the matchup.

Amherst pulled their keeper for the extra skater with 1:08 on the clock and out shot the visitors, 9-3, in the third period, but the Mammoths were unable to pull the teams even late as Colby secured the 1-0 victory.

Walker (13-5-4) took the loss for the Mammoths, making 20 saves, while Prünster (8-3-1) racked up 34 stops for the Mules in the winning effort.

Amherst concluded the night owning a 34-21 advantage in shots on target and went 0-for-5 on the power play, while Colby finished 0-for-2 up a skater.

The sides return to the ice at Orr Rink tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 22 at 3:00PM for the Mammoths' 2019-2020 regular season finale and Senior Day.
