AMHERST, Mass. – Amherst College's Caitlyn Ryan '17 and Alex Toupal '18 were each named CCM Division III Second Team East All-Americans by the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) as recently announced by the organization.
The All-American teams are divided into two teams in both the East and West regions, with each team comprised of five student-athletes. Middlebury's Maddie Winslow was the only other NESCAC representative on the All-America teams
Ryan earned her first All-American honor after racking up First Team All-NESCAC honors earlier this season. A force at the blue line, Ryan paced all NESCAC defenders in points and assists with 10 and nine respectively, helping the Purple & White secure a 13-1-2 league record en route to the second seed in the conference tournament. Ryan finished with 18 points on four goals and 14 assists and now has 49 points (10 goals, 39 assists) over the first three years of her career. Ryan helped the team post a 1.30 goals-against average which ranked fifth nationally.
Toupal, who also earned First Team All-NESCAC accolades, picked up her first All-American selection after leading the Purple & White in goals (23), assists (16), points (39), game winning goals (7), and short-handed scores (3). Led by her sharpshooting, Amherst averaged 4.11 goals per game which tied for third in the country entering NCAA postseason play.
Ryan and Toupal helped Amherst return to its first NESCAC title game for the first time since the 2011-12 campaign where it met Middlebury and suffered a heart-breaking, 5-4 loss in the title game. The Purple & White, under the direction of fourth-year head coach Jeff Matthews, earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Championship for the first time since 2011-12, but fell to Plattsburgh State, 5-0 in First Round play.
