HENNIKER, N.H. – Emily Flom '15 and Stephanie Clegg '12 scored two goals apiece to lead the fifth-ranked Amherst College women's ice hockey team to a 7-2 win at New England College Tuesday evening.
Flom's first two collegiate goals helped Amherst (7-2-0) take a 4-0 lead into the second period, and the Jeffs carried a 6-0 advantage into the third. The Pilgrims (3-7-1) recorded both of their goals in the third frame before Clegg netted her second power-play tally of the night in the final minute of regulation.
Ellen Swiontkowski '12 and Josie Fisher '12 each added a goal and two assists for Amherst, while Ashley Salerno '14, Geneva Lloyd '13 and Melissa Martin '15 had two assists apiece.
Amherst held a 51-17 advantage in shots, as Kerri Stuart '14 recorded 15 saves and improved to 4-1 on the season. Teraysa White stopped 44 shots in an impressive effort for the Pilgrims.
Flom put the Jeffs on the board at 6:09, with Kate Beemer '15 picking up an assist for her first collegiate point. After Swiontkowski bumped Amherst's lead to 2-0 at 14:54, Flom needed only 26 seconds to make it a 3-0 game. Erin Babineau '13 got in one last goal before the first intermission, giving the Jeffs a 4-0 cushion at 19:56.
Clegg pushed the visitors' lead to 5-0 4:44 into the second period, putting an end to Amherst's stretch of 10 consecutive power play opportunities without a goal. Fisher then scored during a 4-on-4 session with only 19 seconds on the clock, giving the Jeffs a 6-0 lead heading into the final period.
The Pilgrims got on the board when Chelsie Boroski scored a short-handed, unassisted goal 8:57 into the third frame. It took only 30 seconds for New England to strike again, as Chelsea Torrico scored on the power play at 9:27.
Clegg closed out the scoring at 19:49 while Amherst was on a 5-on-4 advantage, marking the third time the Jeffs scored with fewer than 20 seconds remaining in the period.
The Lord Jeffs will resume conference play when they host Colby College this Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 3 p.m.
