Amherst Wraps up Weekend with 5-1 Win Over Camels

AMHERST, MA – The top-ranked Amherst College women's hockey team completed its series sweep of Connecticut College with a 5-1 victory over the Camels Saturday afternoon at Orr Rink. The Lord Jeffs improve to 8-1-2 overall and 5-0-1 in NESCAC play, while the Camels fall to 2-9-1 (1-6-1 NESCAC).

With Williams College suffering a 5-1 loss to Trinity College on Saturday, Amherst took sole possession of first place in the NESCAC standings as the lone team without a conference loss. The Lord Jeffs increased their winning streak over Connecticut to 10 games and bumped their unbeaten streak in regular season conference play to 48 games (40-0-8). Amherst is outscoring NESCAC opponents by a 30-4 margin this year.

Amherst scored twice in the first period, twice in the second and added a third goal in the final frame, while the visitors got their lone goal with 6:12 remaining in regulation to wrap up the scoring for both teams. Tri-captain Courtney Hanlon (Fullerton, CA) led Amherst with two goals and an assist, while Ashleigh Kowtoniuk was the Camels' lone goal scorer.

In addition to going 2-for-6 on the power play, Amherst did not commit a penalty of its own until the 11:37 mark of the third period. The Jeffs would be sent to the penalty box twice on the day, but the Camels could not convert on the power play either time.

Junior Randi Zukas (Glen Head, NY) put Amherst on the board 11:12 into the game with a slapshot on the power play. After recording an assist on Zukas' goal, Hanlon put one in with 1:36 remaining before the first intermission to give the Jeffs a 2-0 lead after the opening period.

Sophomore Josie Fisher (Norwich, VT) and Hanlon scored within 2:42 of each other midway through the second period to give Amherst a 4-0 advantage. On her second goal Hanlon stole the puck from one Connecticut defender, got past another and beat goaltender Sara Christopher with a high shot.

It took only 12 seconds of third-period action for Amherst to make it a 5-0 game, as junior forward Brittney Evans (Edina, MN) scored on assists by Megan Curry (Shorewood, MN) and Alyssa Chwick (Purchase, NY).

Kowtoniuk would put her team on the board at the 13:48 mark, with assists going to Ariel DiPasquale and Sam Schoenberger.

Christopher finished with 35 saves for the Camels, while junior Caroline Hu (Cerritos, CA) had 18 stops for the Jeffs. Amherst returns to action Friday, Jan. 15, to begin a two-game series at Middlebury College. The Camels will host Salve Regina Tuesday, Jan. 12 in a non-conference game.
