Women's Hockey Picks up 1-0 Win at Saint Anselm

MANCHESTER, NH – The defending National Champion No. 2 Amherst College women's hockey team traveled to face Saint Anselm College this evening in non-conference action.  The first two periods were scoreless, but early in the third the Lord Jeffs found a hole in the defense to take the game by a score of 1-0.  With the win, the Lord Jeffs improve to 13-2-4 (8-1-3 NESCAC), while the Hawks drop to 10-8-1 (8-4-1 ECAC East).

The Lord Jeffs had several key opportunities to score early in the game, but Hawk goaltender Amy Zappen and the Hawks' defense kept the nationally-ranked team off the board through the first two periods.  However, 51 seconds into the third period, Ellen Swiontkowski  (Minnetonka, MN) drove the puck in towards the net and took a shot, which was saved by Zappen.  Geneva Lloyd (Calgary, Alberta) tried her hand at the rebound, and then Swiontkowski finally found an open space, as she shoved the puck past Zappen just across the goal line for the only goal of the game.

The Hawks outshot the Lord Jeffs 9-7 in the first period, but the Lord Jeffs gained momentum late in the game to put 29 total shots on target, while the Hawks' totaled just 16.  Amy Zappen made 28 saves in the game, and Caroline Hu (Cerritos, CA) turned aside 16 shots to pick up her eighth win of the season and her ninth career shutout.

Amherst will play host to NESCAC rival Bowdoin College this weekend for a pair of home games, including 2010 Senior Day. The Lord Jeffs and Polar Bears will play Friday night at 7 p.m., and then honor the Class of 2010 prior to Saturday's 3 p.m. game.
