MIDDLEBURY, VT – The Amherst College women's ice hockey team dropped to .3-3 on the season this afternoon when they dropped a NESCAC match-up at Middlebury College, 1-0. The loss is the second straight for the Lord Jeffs, following a loss to Williams College last night.
While the final scoreboard read 1-0 in favor of the Panthers, Amherst played evenly with their NESCAC rival, and out-shot Middlebury 28-23 overall. The first period of play saw each team create a number of scoring chances, but neither squad could find the back of the net.
The lone goal of the game was scored by Middlebury's Shannon Sylvester (Randolphe, NJ) at the 10:27 mark of the first period, when she was set up on a two quick passes by Annemarie Cellino (West Seneca, NY) and Shannon Tarrant (Brookfield, CT). Sylvester's goal was the only shot which Amherst goaltender Krystyn Elek (Summerville, SC) was not able to stop, as she made 22 saves on the day.
The final period presented several power play opportunities for the Jeffs, but they were unable to capitalize, going 0-for-9 on the power play. Their best scoring chances came when Anna MacLean (Edina,MN) hit the post to continue the shutout.
Amherst returns to the ice when they face SUNY-Plattsburgh at Orr Rink on Friday, December 8 at 7:00 p.m.
