Jeffs Fall to Top-Ranked Elmira

AMHERST, MA - An upset-minded Amherst College women's hockey team took a 2-1 lead into the final period but came away with a hard-fought 5-2 non-league loss to the No. 1-ranked team in the nation, Elmira College, in a game played on neutral ice at Williams College on Friday night. The Jeffs close their regular season at 8-11-5 and await the start of the NESCAC Postseason Championship Tournament, which kicks off next Saturday.

Reigning Co-NESCAC Player of the Week Rachel Simon (West Orange, NJ) scored both Amherst goals for a 2-1 Lord Jeff lead in the second period, but Elmira rebounded with four unanswered tallies over a 4:43 stretch in the final stanza to seal the win, upping its record to a sparkling 19-3.

Senior Laura Hurd (Kingston, Ont.) connected twice for Elmira and was joined in the scoring column by classmates and fellow Canadians Lindsay Palmer (Echo Bay, Ont.), Charissa Gawant (Sault St. Marie, Ont.) and Shannon Sargent (Lumby, British Col.). Hurd also dished out a pair of assists.

Sophomore Kirsten Forsberg (Kenilworth, IL), junior Renee Sisti (Coventry, CT) and rookie Christa Porcaro (Pelham, NY) assisted on Simon's scoring strikes. Simon finishes the regular season with a team-high 29 points on 12 goals and 17 assists.

Sophomore goalie Lindsay Grabowski (Princeton, NJ) went the distance for Amherst with 22 saves. First-year Cara McGurry (Winnipeg, Manitoba) turned away 18 shots for Elmira.
