Jeffs Tie Utica, 3-3

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College women's hockey team played visiting non-conference foe Utica College to a 3-3 overtime tie on Sunday. Junior Renee Sisti (Coventry, CT) and sophomore Tes Siarnacki (Gardner, MA) each had a goal and an assist, while sophomore Rachel Simon (West Orange, NJ) dished out two assists as the Jeffs moved to 2-3-2.

The Jeffs dominated play early, building a 2-0 lead in the first five minutes on goals by Sisti and first-year Nat Khazzam (Montreal, Quebec), and not allowing a shot on goal until the 11-minute mark. However, Utica cut the Jeff advantage to one with 2:29 left in the opening period as sophomore Courtney Bills (Penfield, NY) slipped in a backhand on a breakaway.

The two squads battled through 17 minutes of scoreless play to open the second frame until Amherst junior Amanda Mattei (Windsor, CT) ripped a one-timer from the blue line and Siarnacki crashed the net to stuff home the rebound. Utica pulled back within a goal just 1:05 later as sophomore Deanna Wiegand (Utica, MI) picked up a loose puck and found the net, and the Pioneers netted the game-tying score 7:21 into the final period as sophomore Lindsay Pemble (Pittsfield, MA) capitalized on an Amherst turnover for the goal.

Amherst sophomore Lindsay Grabowski (Princeton, NJ) posted 20 saves in goal, including a pair of breakaway stops in the second period and a sprawling save with just five seconds left in the overtime session. Senior Sarah Dewiler (Tulsa, OK) collected 28 saves for Utica, which moved to 5-2-1.

Amherst returns to action Friday, January 7 at 7 p.m. against visiting fifth-ranked NESCAC opponent Bowdoin College.
