Jeffs Pierce Win Column With 2-1 Victory Over Wesleyan

AMHERST, MA - First-year forward Leah Kaplan (Buffalo, NY) knocked a rebound into the back of the net with less than three minutes remaining in regulation, giving the Amherst College women's hockey team its first victory of the season, a 2-1 decision over visiting NESCAC and Little Three rival Wesleyan University, Friday night at Orr Rink. With the victory, the Jeffs improve to 1-6-3 overall and 1-4-2 in conference play while the Cardinals drop to 2-8-1 and 0-7.

Amherst broke the ice 6:39 into the third period when junior forward Tory Serues (Cambridge, MA) gathered a long rebound and fired a right-handed wrister in from the slot. Wesleyan countered on the power play when senior defender Liza Eckels (Etna, NH) took a face-off win and slid the puck past senior netminder Heidi Alexander (Edina, MN). Shortly thereafter, Kaplan notched the game-winner for the Jeffs.

Alexander was stellar in net and finished with 24 saves, while junior Elizabeth Courtney (Belmont, MA) recorded 15 for the Cardinals.

Amherst returns to action Saturday at 3 p.m. against visiting NESCAC foe Trinity College.
