Jeffs Downed at Fourth-Ranked Middlebury, 8-1

MIDDLEBURY, VT – The Amherst College women's hockey team fell to 1-9-3 overall and 1-7-2 in conference play with an 8-1 loss at fourth-ranked Middlebury College (10-1-1/9-0-1) on Saturday. Senior forward Angela Kapus (Milwaukie, OR) led the Panthers with four points while junior forward Elissa Landes (Potomac, MD) notched the lone goal for the Jeffs.

Middlebury tallied four goals in the opening period. Sophomore forward Lorna Gifis (Princeton, NJ) ignited the barrage firing a shot into the back of the net. The hosts tacked on three more goals in the second before Landes netted her first goal of the season 2:28 into the third, assisted by senior forward Danielle Williams (Needham, MA). Rookie forward Elizabeth Johnston (Charlestown, MA) scored with less than five minutes remaining to round the scoring out at 8-1.

Senior netminder Heidi Alexander (Edina, MN) and sophomore K.C. Cosentino (Greenwich, CT) combined to turn aside 22 shots for the Jeffs, while Panther first-year goalie Kate Kogut (Springfield, MA) finished with nine.

Amherst returns to action Sunday at 3 p.m. at NESCAC and Little Three rival Williams College.
