Williams Lead Jeffs Past UMass Boston Club Squad, 8-6

BOSTON, MA - Senior co-captain forward Danielle Williams (Needham, MA) tallied four goals and six points on Wednesday night to lead the Amherst College women's ice hockey team to an 8-6 exhibition win at UMass Boston. Fellow senior co-captain Heidi Alexander (Edina, MN) posted 23 saves in goal en route to the win.

The Jeffs took a 3-1 lead into the first intermission, thanks to a pair of goals by Williams and another by rookie Amanda Mattei (Windsor, CT), but the host Beacons stormed back with three unanswered scores in the second period. Graduate student Sebrina Monsen connected twice for UMass Boston, including the go-ahead tally with 12:12 on the clock.

The lead was short-lived, however, as sophomore Sarah Mason (Minneapolis, MN) and junior Ali White (Brookline, MA) retaliated with a pair of second period goals for a 5-4 Amherst advantage.

Williams gave the Jeffs some breathing room with two more scoring strikes in the final stanza. The Beacons then pulled their goalie with three minutes remaining and found the back of the net twice with goals by freshmen Kelly Maloney and Kelly Rowe, cutting the deficit to 7-6 with 2:07 left in regulation.

White stopped the bleeding with an empty-net goal with just 11 seconds to play, setting the final score at 8-6. Freshman goalie Shannon Palmer stopped 33 shots for the Beacons.

The win does not count on Amherst's won-loss record nor do the stats from Wednesday's game, as UMass Boston fields a club squad and plays strictly exhibition games.

Amherst returns to action Friday at 7 p.m. against visiting NESCAC and Little Three rival Wesleyan University.
