Jeffs Drop Season-Opener to Williams, 4-1

AMHERST, MA - The women's hockey team dropped its season-opener to visiting NESCAC and Little Three rival Williams College, 4-1, Friday night at Orr Rink. First-year defender Taylor Tyson (Mequon, WI) paced the Ephs with two goals while sophomore forward Gigi Stender (Chicago, IL) also dished out a pair of assists.

Tyson set the tone with the game's first goal 8:00 into the opening period, skating in on a breakaway and lifting a backhanded shot into the top of the net. Williams extended the lead to 3-0 with a pair of goals in the second stanza. First-year defender Ericka Latham (Edina, MN) fired a shot in off an Amherst defender's skate and sophomore defender Wendy Stone (Buffalo, NY) took a feed from first-year forward Jackie Goff (Orleans, MA) and stuffed the puck home on the power play.

The Jeffs negated the shutout early in the third period when junior forward Tory Serues (Cambridge, MA) took a rebound and slipped the puck between Eph goalie Monelle Quevillon's (Mascouche, Quebec) legs. Tyson notched her second goal of the contest on a 2-on-1 breakaway to set the final score at 4-1. Amherst senior netminder Heidi Alexander (Edina, MN) was stellar in net, finishing with 37 saves while robbing the Ephs of numerous legitimate scoring opportunities. Quevillon recorded 19 saves for Williams. With the loss, the Jeffs fall to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play while the sixth-ranked Ephs improve to 1-0 and 1-0.

Amherst returns to action Saturday at 3 p.m. against visiting NESCAC foe Middlebury College.
