Jeffs Blanked by Visiting Southern Maine, 5-0

AMHERST, MA - After dropping a heartbreaker to visiting NESCAC rival Hamilton Saturday night, the Amherst College women's hockey team returned to Orr Rink Sunday afternoon and fell to undefeated non-conference foe Southern Maine, 5-0. With the loss the Jeffs drop to 3-8 overall, while the Huskies improve to 9-0-2.

Senior forwards Heather Hill (Pascoag, RI) and junior Amy Matuewezski (Woonsocket, RI) paced the Huskies with two points apiece and teammate junior forward Holly Manning (Northfield, VT) knocked in her team-leading 10th goal of the season. Jeffs sophomore forward Alison White (Brookline, MA) set up numerous scoring chances for her teammates, however, none of them were able to beat sophomore goaltender Karen Jamnik (Cranston, RI), en route to a 16-save performance for Southern Maine.

Matuewezski netted the first goal for the visitors 3:00 into the opening period, chipping a rebound through the legs of Amherst junior goalie Heidi Alexander (Edina, MN). Husky junior forward Courtney Rideout (South Portland, ME) tallied her seventh goal of the season on a wrap-a-round attempt, giving the visitors a 3-0 advantage to end the first period.

Manning would round out the scoring, 5-0, shooting a wrister from the slot into the top corner of the net. The contest was then called off with two minutes left, due to a widespread power failure.

Amherst returns to action Wednesday at 7 p.m. at non-conference foe New England College.
