Amherst Smothers Warriors to Return to Winning Ways

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. --  Amherst College outscored Eastern Connecticut State University 37-14 over the second and third quarters and picked up a 64-39 victory over the Warriors in non-conference women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Geissler Gymnasium.

Madeline Eck '20 scored 20 points on 10-14 shooting for Amherst, who improves to 4-1 while dropping the Warriors to 4-2 on the season.

The Amherst defense held ECSU to 9-46 from the floor (19.6%), including 1-11 in the third quarter, where Hannah Fox '20 (7 points) and Courtney Resch '22 (5 points) each outscored the Warriors.

Resch scored 16 points and had six blocks, along with six rebounds. Fox scored 11 points and added five steals and three assists.

Despite a tight first quarter that ended with the Mammoths ahead 13-11, Amherst never trailed in the contest. Mya Villard tied the score with a layup to start the second quarter, before a layup by Eck kicked off a 9-0 Amherst run that ended with a Resch three-pointer to put the visitors ahead 22-13.

Eck gave Amherst a double-digit lead mid-way through the second quarter, a period in which she scored ten of her points and was a perfect 5-5 from the floor.

Kate Sullivan '21, who dished out a game-high six assists, hit a three-pointer to give Amherst a 29-17 lead, and it stayed in double-digits for the rest of the game.

Amherst racked up 18 assists to just four by Eastern Connecticut, who got eight points out of Anna Barry and seven points from Villard, as well as a team-high six rebounds.

Sullivan scored six points and grabbed six rebounds for Amherst, also aided by three assists and five ponts from Cam Hendricks '20.

Barry also had two steals and two blocks for the Warriors, while Aiyana Ward had five points and five rebounds off of the bench.

Eastern Connecticut State was just 2-11 from the three-point line and 19-32 (59.4%) from the free throw line. Amherst shot 53.8% from the field and led overwhelmingly in points in the paint (44-12).

The Mammoths have three weeks off before they take the court again, and when they do it will be in Las Vegas for the Classic. Amherst takes on DeSales at 2:00 PM Eastern time on Saturday, December 28th.
