Amherst Fends Off Impressive Mariners Squad in 2018 Home Finale

AMHERST, Mass. – Madeline Eck '20 recorded a game high 19 points and a team-high five rebounds to lead Amherst College women's basketball to a 68-39 win over Maine Maritime Academy at LeFrak Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Mammoths advance to 6-1 while the Mariners mark just their second loss of the season, falling to 6-2.

Eck was 8-13 from the field and 3-3 at the foul line to match her season high of 19 points. She has scored in double-figures in all seven games this year for Amherst.

She helped the Mammoths opened the game strong, converting two layups and hitting a pair of free throws to score six out of the first 12 points for the Purple & White. She finished the first quarter with 12 points and one steal.

The Mammoths were able to create some separation early when they went on a 12-0 in the final four minutes of the first stanza. Melinda Ogden grabbed a quick three pointer before the time ran out for Maine Maritime, and Amherst led 20-10 after the first quarter.  

Amherst continued their resiliency as they outscored the Mariners 14-9 before halftime. They notched an 11-3 run right off the start, led by Hannah Fox '20 who scored seven of the points. Alayne Felix scored a pair of baskets in an attempt to keep things close between both sides.

Felix led the way for the Mariners, shooting 50% from the field for 17 points on the night.

In the third quarter, she hit a pair of free throws to bring Maine Maritime back to within fourteen before the Mammoths continued separating themselves by hitting 4-6 from behind the three-point line in the fourth quarter.

For the game, Amherst shot 44.6% from the field while holding Maine Maritime to just 33.3%.

Fox shot 5-12 from the field, finishing with thirteen points, five steals and four assists on the day. Cam Hendricks '20 was the third Mammoth to score in double-figures as she grabbed 10 points, shooting 2-4 from downtown. She also had a pair of blocks and a pair of steals, while Eck had two assists, five rebounds and three thefts.

Ogden and Lauren Plissey followed up with eight and seven points respectively. Felix grabbed a game-high seven rebounds, helping the Mariners to a 36-22 edge on the boards.

Amherst returns to action after the holiday when they set their sights on Westfield State on December 28th, beginning at 3:00 PM. The Mariners will travel to Bowdoin College for the Coastal Classic Tournament, facing off against Cedar Crest in the first match on Saturday 29th.
