Mammoths Sweep Weekend Series with Panthers

AMHERST, Mass.- The Amherst College Softball team finished off a three game series by grabbing two more wins in a double header on Sunday afternoon against Middlebury College.

The Mammoths took down the Panthers 3-0 and 7-2. Leading the way were pitchers Gina Pagan '18 and Lorena Ukanwa '19, who struck out 11 and 13 batters, respectively, in their separate outings.

Amherst is now 17-2 this season and 5-0 in NESCAC competition. Middlebury falls to 6-7 overall and 0-3 in the NESCAC.


GAME 2: Amherst 3, Middlebury 0

In the first game of the day, it took until the fifth inning for Amherst to put up the only three runs of the game.

Pagan (7-2) struck out 11 and only allowed four hits in her complete game victory. She has gone the distance in all nine  games she has started this season.

In the bottom of the fifth, an RBI triple by Sammy Salustri '19 broke a scoreless tie. A bases loaded single by Kyra Naftel '19 followed by a sac fly by Aly Plaman '21 made it 3-0 Amherst.  

Amherst would hang on for the last two innings to take the first game of the day.


GAME 2: Amherst 7, Middlebury 2

The final game of the weekend featured much more offense and again resulted in an Amherst win, 7-2.

Ukanwa grabbed the win to improve to 10-0 on the year. She struckout 13 and allowed two runs in six innings of work. Emily Lachtara '21 finished off the final inning for the Mammoths.

Andrea Sanders '20 went 3-4 with 3 RBIs, scored twice, and stole two bags in the contest. Salustri went 1-3 with a walk and two RBIs in Game 2.

Middlebury scored their only two runs in the third inning on a 2 RBI single by Liza Tarr. Amherst would add two more runs in the third and another in the fifth to make it 7-2.

The Mammoths travel to Smith College on Wednesday for a doubleheader before conference play versus Williams next weekend (4/13 & 4/14)
