Softball Sweeps Final Day of Florida Trip, Moves to 9-1

CLERMONT, Fla. – No. 7 Amherst College will return from their Spring Break trip to Florida with a 9-1 record after two more wins on Saturday at the Spring Games.

Amherst topped Lake Forest 7-2 in the opening game of the day and then shut out Plymouth State 2-0. The Mammoths will return home for their home opener next Friday at 3:00 pm, a doubleheader against Springfield College.

Game 2: Amherst 2, Plymouth State 0

Lorena Ukanwa '19 was nearly perfect on the day, allowing just one hit and one walk over seven scoreless innings while striking out seven batters.

Andrea Sanders '20 scored both of Amherst's runs, as she and Sammy Salustri '19 had two hits apiece.

Salustri doubled home Sanders in the bottom of the first inning after the leadoff hitter had singled and stole second.

After a one-out single in the bottom of the fifth, Sanders moved to third on another base knock by Salustri, and then scored on a passed ball.

Kyra Naftel '19 had the only other hit in the game for Amherst, who were handled well by Panthers pitcher Caitlyn Miller. Miller took a tough loss with a six-inning, four strikeout performance, allowing just one earned run.

Game 1: Amherst 7, Lake Forest 2

Amherst rapped out 16 base hits, with seven different hitters collecting two hits in the victory.

Alyson Plaman '21 delivered RBI singles in a two-run first inning and again in the third with the bases loaded and Amherst went up 3-0 before a double by Hannah Kalnicky put Lake Forest on the board.

The Mammoths tacked on four more runs in the seventh inning behind an RBI double by Ally Kido '18, a Sanders single up the middle, and a Naftel double to left field.

Gina Pagan '18 went the distance, allowing two runs and striking out six batters.
