Jeffs Split Tuesday's Games to Move to 3-3

FORT MYERS, FL – The Amherst College softball team suffered a 2-1 extra-inning loss to Fredonia State Tuesday morning but rebounded with an 8-2 win over Polytechnic Institute of New York. The Lord Jeffs move to 3-3 on the season, and will continue their week at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic Thursday when they take on Scranton and SUNY Brockport.

Senior tri-captain Alex Chang-Graham (San Carlos, CA) put in a phenomenal pitching performance against Fredonia, but she was dealt a tough loss to move to 1-2 on the season. Chang-Graham allowed a run in the first inning but did not let the Blue Devils score again until the eighth, striking out eight and walking none along the way. Fredonia had only six hits but took advantage of four untimely Amherst errors.

The Lord Jeffs got their only run in the third inning when sophomore Carly Dudzik (Darien, CT) continued her impressive week with a solo home run. Dudzik and senior tri-captain Jackie Tyler (Ridgewood, NJ) each went 1-for-4, while first-year Theresa Kelley (Los Angeles, CA) had a pair of hits. Tyler and Kelley also combined for three stolen bases.

Tyler, Kelley and senior tri-captain Emily Neill (Kentfield, CA) each had two hits in the win over Polytechnic. First-year Reilly Horan (Darien, CT) went 3-for-4 with a bases-clearing double that scored three runs to put Amherst ahead in the third inning. The Lord Jeffs added four runs in the fourth inning thanks to consecutive singles by junior Sam Presnal (Belchertown, MA), junior Jill Masi (Stamford, CT), Tyler and Kelley. Tyler also added her third stolen base of the day in the fourth inning.

Kelley picked up the win to improve to 2-1. She allowed two runs—one earned—when she gave up a homer in the third inning, surrendering five hits on the day with two strikeouts and three walks.
