Softball Opens Third Varsity Season 7-2 after Spring Training

In its third season as a varsity team, softball has experienced success early with a talented lineup of young players. The squad won five of its games by five or more runs, including two mercy rule decisions after five innings against two opponents. Returning North with a boost of confidence, the 1997 Jeffs hope to extend their five-game win streak against league opponents.

Rookie right-hander Allison Schwarting (Los Angeles, CA) began her collegiate pitching career by striking out the first six batters she faced among her 11 Ks in a 12-2 win over Nichols. That same game, Schwarting lined two singles for a team-leading 4 RBI. The pitcher took home a 4-2 record and a 2.18 ERA, while batting .250 with 6 stolen bases in 7 attempts.

First-baseman Darcy Sweeney '00 (Keene, NH) leads the team in hitting with a .419 batting average and a .613 slugging percentage. Fellow froshMeghan Henderson (Tampa, FL) and Liza Feldman (Lincoln, MA) have also made an impact early, winning starting positions at 3rd and shortstop, respectively. Joined by sophomore Sandy Accordino (Closter, NJ) at 2nd, the underclassmen compose a skilled infield that has helped to hold opponents to 23 runs and 33 hits, while the Jeff offense has tripled those numbers with 65 runs and 85 hits, 16 for multiple bases, to date.

Sarah Rinaldi (Washington, DC) leads the Jeffs with 10 RBI and a pair of triples and homers in her junior season. The right-fielder claimed two stolen bases after a walk by Nichols pushed Amherst towards its first run of the season. Joining the lefty in the outfield are junior Beth Leonard (Longmeadow, MA) and senior co-captain Sam Ince (Garden City, NY).

After two decisive wins to start the season, the Jeffs found themselves deadlocked with Babson 1-1 after seven innings. Going into the tiebreaker, Amherst flied out on four batters while the Beavers had two successful sacrifice hits for the winning run. Dropping the following game 1 0 to Wheaton, junior co-captain Jen Shea (Hatfield, MA) claimed her second win of the season throwing to rookie catcher Melissa Roja (Los Altos Hills, CA)in a 6-4 decision against Pioneer Valley rival Smith.
