Softball Posts 5-1 Week off Three Doubleheaders

Softball continues to roll over its opponents behind the lethal pitching arm of rookie Allison Schwarting (Los Angeles, CA). The righthander earned NESCAC Player of the Week honors for the second straight time after compiling a 4-0 record. Schwarting struck out 24 batters, including eight against WNEC, while holding both Wesleyan and WNEC to one-hit shutouts. Boasting a league-leading 0.97 ERA, Schwarting has a .345 average at the plate after going 7-19 with four RBI.

The Jeffs kicked off the week by splitting a doubleheader at Pioneer Valley rival Smith. Taking the first game 5-3, Amherst got off to a fast start by scoring four of its first five batters. But Smith retaliated in the second game with a 4-0 lead after the first and a seven-run 5th to seal the matchup. Sarah Rinaldi (Washington, DC) went 4-6 for the day with four RBI.

Hosting Little III foe Wesleyan two days later, the Jeffs pounded the Cardinals with Schwarting on the mound. She posted her third one-hit shuout of the season in game one as Amherst claimed an 8-0 win before a 13-2 rout in game two. Senior Co-Captain Sam Ince (Garden City, NY) drove in five runs for the day with three hits, including her second home run of the season. Junior Beth Leonard (Longmeadow, MA) went a perfect 3-3 at the plate in the second game.

Amherst had two more games called early on the mercy rule as the Jeffs finished a doubleheader against Western New England College in under three hours. Schwarting allowed only a late-game single while striking out eight batters in a 15-0 win in the opener. Junior Co Captain Jen Shea (Hatfield, MA) followed up with a 10-2 win in the second game
