AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College men's & women's track & field teams and 14 individual student-athletes garnered U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic honors for their excellence in the classroom and on the circle in 2018-19, as announced by the organization Monday.
To be named an USTFCCCA All-Academic Team, a program must boast a cumulative team GPA of at least a 3.1 on a 4.0 scale through the most recent semester. In total, 297 Division III programs, including 184 women's teams and 113 men's teams, were honored by the USTFCCCA for their academics, with both the men's & women's Mammoths track & field programs posting team GPA's of 3.55 to qualify as All-Academic. The Saint Vincent College's women had the best cumulative GPA out of any program at the NCAA DIII level (3.79), while the men's team with the highest cumulative GPA was Caltech (3.69).
Individually, an impressive 14 student-athletes earned recognition for their work in the classroom and on the track, with five women and nine men capturing USTFCCCA All-Academic praise.
To qualify for USTFCCCA Individual All-Academic honors, student-athletes must have compiled a cumulative GPA of at least 3.30 while also reaching the athletic standard of either finishing the regular season ranked in the national top-50 in an individual event or in the national top-35 in a relay event or competing at either the NCAA Indoor or Outdoor Championships. Including the Scholar Athletes of the Year, 462 men and 631 women earned All-Academic honors.
On the women's side, Christina Scartelli '19 (Biology), Ella Rossa '21 (Psychology), Sophia Friedman '21 (Law, Jurisprudence and Social Thought), Juanita Jaramillo '22 (Undeclared) and Anna Madden '22 (Undeclared) claimed All-Academic praise, while Sam Amaka '19 (Psychology), Cosmo Brossy '19 (Art & the History of Art), Kristian Sogaard '19 (Biology), Clark Ricciardelli '20 (Mathematics), Ralph Skinner '20 (Economics), Spencer Ferguson-Dryden '20 (Computer Science & Political Science), Ryan Prenosil '21 (Undeclared), Henry Buren '22 (Undeclared) and Troy Colleran '22 (Undeclared) represented the Mammoths for the men.
Amherst concluded a strong 2018-19 season with seven All-Americans, qualifying for nine individual and one relay at the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships.
