Men's Tennis Advances to Regional Final with Win Over Wilkes

AMHERST, Mass. – The #4 Amherst College men's tennis team is heading back to the NCAA Division III Regional finals for the third straight year after a 5-0 victory over Wilkes on Saturday afternoon at the Amherst Tennis Courts.

The Mammoths (17-4) will host Mary Washington at 12:00 PM tomorrow, with a trip to the national quarterfinals in Kalamazoo, Michigan on the line. Amherst is looking for their first trip to the finals site since 2015.

With three wins at doubles, Amherst was well on their way to a win over Wilkes, who finishes their season with a 15-7 record.

First year Harris Foulkes and senior Zach Bessette set the tone with a dominant 8-0 win at second doubles to open play, with Sean Wei '21 and Jayson Fung '20 following quickly behind with an 8-3 win over Colonel's top doubles team of Andrew MacDonald and Courtney Murphy.

Looking to sweep the doubles play, William Turchetta '22 and Damien Ruparel '22 found themselves trailing 5-4 to Jonathan White and Chris Maderitz, but battled to win four straight games and earn an 8-5 win and a third point for the Mammoths.

Kevin Ma '21 picked up the baton from his teammates and put together an impressive 6-1, 6-0 win over Braddock Chow at #2 singles to put the Mammoths a point away from victory.

With several players on the brink of victory, Turchetta closed out the match with a 6-0, 6-0 win at #6 singles.

Foulkes & Bessette were each a game away from victory when the match finished, while Fung was just two games shy of closing out his third singles match.

Amherst, in their 20th NCAA tournament appearance, improves to 38-17 all-time in NCAA play, and has been in the Regional Finals in each of their last 12 tournament runs.

Mary Washington (23-4) defeated Stevens 5-1 in the other semifinal on the day.
