MEDFORD, Mass. – The Amherst men's tennis team concludes their first day at the Tufts/Deis Invitational which saw six Mammoths, over two Flights, still in the running of the singles draw Championship Friday afternoon.
(Today's competition only consisted of the first round of the singles draw for both flights. Doubles action begins tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM)
Flight A, Zach Bessette '19 started it off for Amherst as he faced up against Carl Grant (Tufts), where he took the win after three sets (6-0, 4-6, 10-5). Number one seeded Sean Wei '21 took down his first opponent of the tournament, Andre Xiao (Middlebury), by a 6-2, 6-3 mark. Jayson Fung '20 went on to defeat his opponent, Adrian Roji (Wesleyan), 7-6 (1) ret. to advance to the second day of competition. All three student-athletes moved to the round of 16 and will begin action tomorrow starting at 3:00 PM. Kevin Ma '21 was the last Mammoth in Flight A where he saw an early exit after a 1-6, 6-0, 10-5 loss to Adam Tzeng (Brandeis).
Flight B, Damien Ruparel '22 was able to notch a big victory in his first match of the tournament, taking down number one seeded Ali Mooraj (Wesleyan) by a score of 5-7, 6-4, (10-5). William Turchetta '22 made short workings of his opponent as he won in two sets (6-3, 6-0). Number two seeded Harris Foulkes '22 was also able to secure his spot in the round of sixteen when he took down Zach Fleischman (Wesleyan) 1-6, 6-4, (10-7). Jesse Levitin '19 was the last Mammoth in Flight B as he fell to number four seeded Larry Zhao (Bowdoin) 7-5, 6-3 in the first round.
