Jack Fitzgerald, T.J. Syner Join Men's Hockey Coaching Staff

AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College Athletics Department and the Mammoths' men's ice hockey program are happy to announce the recent hiring of Jack Fitzgerald '19 and T.J. Syner as assistant coaches for the program.

A 2019 graduate of Amherst College with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, Jack Fitzgerald '19 joins the Mammoths' coaching staff after a successful four-year playing career donning the Purple & White. Selected as a captain during his senior season and named to the 2018-2019 NESCAC Winter All-Sportsmanship Team, Fitzgerald racked up 43 points behind 24 goals and 19 assists in 102 appearances as a play-making forward.

In addition to his experience as a student-athlete, Fitzgerald also boasts hockey operations, marketing and coaching skills developed during a stint as an assistant director at Elite Hockey Program.

Outside of the rink, Fitzgerald enjoys remaining active as an avid mountain and road biker, snowboarder and action photography enthusiast.

Additionally, T.J. Syner is set to join Coach Arena and Coach Fitzgerald on the ice in 2019-20, bringing an impressive resume to Orr Rink.

Graduating from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a degree in finance & operations management from the Isenberg School of Management in 2012, Snyer comes to the Mammoths following a season-long stint as an assistant coach at his alma mater – helping guide the Minutemen to a program record 31 wins and a Frozen Four appearance.

A two-year captain the University of Massachusetts, Snyer ended his collegiate career with 37 goals and 60 assists for 97 points in 135 games to rank 14th all-time on UMass' career scoring list and tied for 10th overall in career assists. Voted the team's most valuable player 2012, Syner also picked up a Hockey East All-Conference Honorable Mention nod for his efforts during in his senior campaign.

Embarking on a career in the pros following graduation, Snyer turned in seven strong seasons in the professional hockey ranks from 2012 to 2018 – seeing action in the AHL (Hershey Bears), the ECHL (Reading Royals, Utah Grizzlies, Worcester Railers) and oversees in Italy (AlpsHL Gherdëina) and England (EIHL Coventry Blaze).

Proficient in skating, skill development and the teaching of strategies and team tactics, Syner has also acted as an assistant coach for the U16 Springfield Pics, a skill instructor at Paul Vincent Hockey School and Olympia Ice Hockey Academy, and is the founder of First Step Hockey School -  an annual youth hockey program.

"TJ has a wealth of experience as a player and was part of the UMass staff that directed that program's historic run last season.  Jack brings an understanding of our program and returning players which will be extremely beneficial in our transition into this season."

The Mammoths kick off the 2019-2020 season on Saturday, November 16 when they host Hamilton College in a clash at Orr Rink beginning at 3PM.
